The White Lady of Messina, Italy

Feast day of the White Lady: August 9

During the Sicilian Vespers (evening prayers) the French attacked Messina en masse.

The walls of the city began to collapse under the great force.
The people of Messina knew that the enemy was much stronger and much better organized.

They prayed and asked Mary for help.

When the battle was at its height and a gigantic avalanche of arrows descended on the people of Messina, a White Lady appeared in bright daylight.
She opened her cloak and sent all the arrows shot back towards the enemy.
Many French soldiers were now hit by their own arrows.
The light that the Lady gave off was so bright that the French could not bear it.
They gave up the fight and retreated.
