Our Lady of the Rosary
Rota, Spain (16th c.)
Our Lady of the Rosary is the patron saint of Rota, an Atlantic coastal town in southern Spain.
Her statue, dating from the 1500s, occupies a blue-tiled chapel in the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la O.
On this day in 1807, Rota’s town council ordered it to be carried in procession with the statue of Christ of the Chapel to pray for the end of a severe drought.
Rains came and saved the crops. The statue is a candelero image designed to be dressed, with finely carved and painted head, hands, and child, mounted on a plain support.
It was canonically crowned on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Oct. 7, 2003.
