Our Lady of Mercy 3
Barcelona, Spain (1218)
The Blessed Virgin appeared on August 1st to Saint Peter, to his confessor, Raymund of Pennafort, and to King James of Aragon, and through them established the Mercedarian religious order (derives from the Spanish word for mercy - merced). Its members would seek to free Christian captives and offer themselves as an exchange.
A feast day was instituted and observed on September 24th. It was extended to the entire Church by pope Innocent Xll in 1696.
