Most Holy Virgin Mary of the Gate

Guastalla, Italy (1693)

In 1646, on the walls surrounding the city of Guastalla, an artist painted near the barracks of the guards of the entrance into the city, an image known as the Madonna della Porta with the infant Jesus in her arms with St. Francis of Assisi and St. Charle Borromeo at her side.

Eventually the walls were torn down with only the section with the old fresco remaining.

On February 7, 1693, Giambattista Zagni of Solapur, became seriously ill and faithfully beseeched Our Lady with a candle. Suddenly he was healed and news traveled quickly and soon other favors and graces followed. A regular canonical process recognized these facts and the image was later canonically crowned by decree of Pope Pius X.
