Most Holy Mary of the Quarry

Marsala, Italy (16th c.)

On January 19 Marsala commemorates the anniversary of the finding of the statue of St. Mary of the Quarry in the early 1500s, after four years of digging under Father Leonardo Savina’s supervision, who was given an insight in a dream that an ancient image was buried in a grotto.

When the statue finally was discovered a number of miraculous healings quickly occurred.

The Madonna became patron of the city, and the grotto tumed into a popular place of worship and prayer.

When a bomb destroyed the church May 11, 1943, the statue remained intact.
