Madonna of the Rock
Calabria, Italy (1968)
On May 11th, 1968, Fratel Cosimo Fragomeni from Santa Domenica di Placanica, a village of Calabria, one of the poorest regions in Italy, reported to the village priest, Don Rocco Gregorace that the Mother of God, appeared him standing on a rock. The Virgin Mary asked Cosimo to transform the valley into a shine in order to bring people closer to God.
Cosimo built a little chapel, that he called “Our Lady of The Rock”. He also placed a marble statue of Our Lady on the rock of the apparitions. While no formal approval has been given, the local Bishop Mons. Morosini, approved the devotion for Faith Expression by declaring the “Scoglio” an official shrine on December 8, 2007.
