Madonna of the Frost

Basella, Italy ( 1356)

The Virgin appeared to Marina Cassone, a teenage peasant.

During the night betweenApril 7th and 8th there had  been a heavy frost that devastated the countryside

In the morning the girl ran to the field to see the damage  and began to mourn. At that moment a lady with a tender hand promised her that the crops would survive if after nine days she would come back to the same place and receive her instructions.

Nine days later Our Lady commended her for  returning  and told her of an ancient church buried below her feet with an altar marked by three stones.

The townspeople came when they heard word of this and excavated the ruins.

The Bishop of Bergamo on May 1, 1356 placed the first  stone of the new shrine to the Virgin.
