Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquira

Maracaibo, Venezuela (1709)

On Tuesday, November 18, 1709, a poor washerwoman from Nueva Zamora de Maracaibo named Saladilia had recovered an old image of the Virgin at the shores and hung it on her wall. One day she was deep in chores, so did not pay attention to a series of knocks that were heard on the wall where the picture hung. The blows were heard again and the third time, she went and she saw the image of the Virgin of Chiquinquira illuminated. In the street she shouted: “Miracle!” and with this began a great devotion. The original image is preserved in the basilica of the same name in Maracaibo. The traditional “Feria de La Chinita” is celebrated during which masses and processions are held in honor of the Virgin. She is the patroness and queen of Colombia, the State of Zulia in Venezuela, and the city of Caraz, in Peru.
