Our Lady of the Fresno

Grado, Spain (17th c.)

In centuries past, people come on pilgrimage to the  Sanctuary for the novenas. If  all households are occupied, the visitors would spend the night in granaries, bread bins and tenadas.

In honor of the Virgen del Fresno, two festivals are  held, one on September 8 and the other on 28th of the  Same month preceded by a “St. Michael” novena that  traditionally starts at four in the afternoon and took the  name of “San Miguel Ninth”.

The novena begins on  September 21 and ends on the 29th, feast of the three archangels Michael, Gabriel  and Rafael, whose iomages are found in the church. A  booklet, “Novena of Fresno”,  by an anonymous author, is widespread in the area and serves as a guide for the ninth.
