Our Lady of Comfort

Arezzo, Italy (1796)

On June 3, 1781 a terrible earthquake devastated the regions surrounding Arezzo, causing hundreds of casualties and great fear for the city.

On February 15, 1796, another earthquake threatened the city. At dusk three craftsmen prayed penitentially and lit a lamp before a popular image of the Virgin blackened by the smoke of a stove. The Madonna of Provenzano image suddenly changed to white and bright.

The word spread that Our Lady wanted to comfort all inhabitants of Arezzo and free them from the scourge of earthquakes. When the news spread, the bishop, accompanied by other priests solemnly carried it to the cathedral and established the canonical process to determine the truth of the events.
