Our Lady of Buenos Aires
Argentine (1536)
In 1536, Spanish explorer Pedro de Mendoza found and named the port of Buenos Aires.
His company brought an image of Santa Maria del Buen Ayre. Navigators had already claimed Our Lady of Good Air as patron and in recognition of her assistance to mariners, her title was altered in Argentina and some other places to Nuestra Senora de los Buenos Aires, Our Lady of Good Winds.
On April 24, 1870 - during the 500th anniversary celebration of the mysterious arrival of the statue to Sardinia - the Bishop of Eritrea crowned the Madonna of Bonaria on the authority of Pope Pius IX. Ever since, devotees of Our Lady of Good Air have celebrated April 24 in her honor.
