Update: Kwangju Archbishop defiantly declares 'automatic excommunication'
Archbishop Andrew Choi of Kwangju, in an apparent excess of his own authority, attempted on January 24, 2008, to declare "automatic excommunication" of those who participate in celebrations in the Chapel or Blessed Mother's Mountain in Naju, applying the decree not only to those in his own diocese but to Catholics anywhere in the world. The Archbishop also unjustly expelled Fr. Aloysius Chang from the archdiocese. We await the Vatican's reply regarding the validity of this astonishing decree.
Update: January 24, 2008
Even though the Local diocese of Gwangju declared the "Automatic excommunication" to the pilgrims to Naju, Korea, thousands of pilgrims at Home and from abroad still visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Naju. It's because the official stance of Catholic Church (Vatican) on Naju Phenomena is "Non Constat de Supernaturalitate". It Means that the pilgrimage to the Shrine of Naju should not be prohibited.
Vatican already sent some orders to accept Naju apparition to Archdiocese of Gwangju, the clergy of Gwangju archdiocese doesn't accept this Marian Apparition and phenomena even now after 30 years passed since the Blessed Mother began to weep Tears through Her Statue for the Salvation of this world.
So, here we send you some proof for that the pilgrimage to Naju is not stopped according to the official position of Catholic Church on Naju Phenomena.
Why does our Mother weep?
Update: January 28, 2016
South Korea was formed in 1948, by the approval of the Federal Constitution instituting the Government of the Republic. However, from 1950 to 1953, it faced a terrible and atrocius war with North Korea, an abominable fight among brothers in search of domain and power. It brought disastrous consequences to the population, which was barbarously attacked and killed, leaving the whole country mourning and impoverished.
It all began in 1980, when Julia Kim, who was suffering from terminal cancer, was miraculously healed. She was at that time a Protestant but eventually converted to Catholicism. In 1982, Julia saw a vision of Jesus with his Sacred Heart bleeding and asking for suffering for the conversion of sinners.
The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Savior, began weeping through her statue owned by Julia Kim in Naju, Korea, on June 30, 1985. Since then, she has brought many messages and other miraculous signs, urging all her children in the world to hurriedly repent their sins and return to God, His Church, His Truth, and His Love, so that He may heal their sinful souls and restore supernatural life to them. She has especially implored us to be loyal to the Heritage of the Faith that Christ entrusted to His Church two thousand years ago and to love and forgive one another. She has also asked us to respect human lives from the moment of conception in the mother’s womb. Our Lady wants everyone to convert from a self-centered life to a life of serving God, defending and spreading His Truth, and passing on His Love to everyone on earth.
Who is Julia Kim?
Her original name is Hong-Sun Yoon. Julia is her baptismal name and Kim is her husband's last name. She was born in Naju, South Korea, on March 3, 1947. Her father was a school teacher and a scholar in Chinese literature. In 1950, when the Korean War broke out, her grandfather and father were killed by the Communist soldiers. Her younger sister also died of an illness. Julia, with her mother, began experiencing extreme poverty and had to work hard for survival. She could not finish junior high school because of the poverty.
Growing up as a Protestant, Julia married in 1972 Julio Kim. Julio works for the City of Naju, in its agricultural department. They have four children; two sons and two daughters. A short time later she became gravely ill. After spending all of her money on doctors, her diagnosis was determined to be cancer. In her depression, Julia felt that her life was not worth living and decided to commit suicide; her husband suggested that she see a Catholic priest before she committed this act. Julia agreed to this request and met with a local parish priest. When the priest greeted her, he declared: "You have received many graces from God." Julia did not understand the full impact of the priest’s words, however she did receive the Holy Spirit in a very special way that day. From that time forward, Julia’s journey of conversion would lead her to a complete healing and ultimately to embrace the Catholic faith.
Julia also often undergoes severe pains for the conversion of others and in reparation for abortions and other sins in the world. Several times, she received the Stigmata while suffering the pains of Crucifixion. She has been allowed to experience Eucharistic miracles. Many people, including priests witnessed that the Sacred Host Julia received had a first turned brown first and then become covered with blood. Many people began to firmly believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist because of these miracles.

The Eucharistic Miracles
Tears of Blood from Our Lady's Statue
For a total of 700 days between June 30, 1985 and January 14, 1992. Samples of the bloody tears were tested in a medical laboratory and were found to be human blood.
Fragrant Oil from Our Lady's Statue:
For seven hundred consecutive days from November 24, 1992, to October 23, 1994.
The External Appearance of Bread in the Holy Eucharist changed into Visible Flesh and Blood on Julia's tongue:
Twelve times between May 1988 and October 1996. The miracle on October 31, 1995, was witnessed by Pope John Paul II during a Mass in the Pope’s private chapel in the Vatican. Bishop Roman Danylak from Toronto, Canada, and Bishop Dominic Su of Sibu, Malaysia, also witnessed the miracles in Naju and Sibu, respectively, and wrote their testimonies expressing their belief in the authenticity of these miracles.
The Sacred Host descended from Above to the Chapel in Naju:
Seven times between November 24, 1994, and August 27, 1997. The first two miracles were witnessed by the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Korea during his visit to Naju.
On July 1, 1995, seven Sacred Hosts descended. They were consumed by two priests and five lay people including Julia according to the local Archbishop’s instruction. The external appearance of the Sacred Host that Julia received changed into visible Flesh and Blood on her tongue. A sample of this Blood was tested in the medical laboratory at Seoul National University and was found to be human blood. The descent of the Eucharist on June 12, 1997, was witnessed by Bishop Paul Kim of the Cheju Diocese in Korea. The Eucharist again descended on August 27, 1997, during Fr. Raymond Spies’ visit to Naju. An intense fragrance is continuing (as of May 1998) from the spot on the floor in the Chapel where the Eucharist landed.
Spiritual and Physical Healings:
Numerous people have regained love and peace in their families and returned to the Sacraments. Many were healed physically, especially while repenting their sinful lives after experiencing Our Lady’s love.
Bleeding occurred on Julia’s two hands and two feet during her sufferings. Doctors examined Julia and stated that her wounds and bleeding had no medical explanation. The first Eucharistic miracle took place in the Naju Parish Church on 5th June 1988 during Mass when Julia Kim received Holy Communion and the Sacred Host turned into flesh and blood in her mouth. Since then, she has experienced this miracle on many occasions, both in Naju and abroad. It has been witnessed by many people, including priests, the Pope's representatives and even the Holy Father himself when Julia visited the Vatican in October 1995. During a private Mass celebrated by the Holy Father, Julia received Holy Communion and the Eucharistic miracle occurred again, for the twelfth time. The Sacred Host turned to flesh and blood on Julia's tongue. The newsletter, Mary's Touch, reported: "Immediately after the Mass, the Holy Father, came to Julia and witnessed this miracle. His Holiness blessed Julia and her companions".
During an apparition, Mary told Kim: "Dig a spring here so that children from all over the world may drink from it. I will call the children from all over the world to wash away the dirt from their souls and bodies. Because I do not want even one soul to be condemned and go to hell, I will invite all to come and drink from the miraculous Spring of Mary's Ark of Salvation in order to convert even the most evil sinners. Make haste. While the world is rushing into moral decay, all the children of the world will soon know that I am the Mediatrix of Graces".
Testimony of Juliana Kyung-Rim Chung:
I am Juliana Kyung-Rim Chung and belong to the Suknam-dong Parish in the Inchon Diocese in Korea. I have one daughter and one son. I would like to give testimony to a miraculous restoration of health to my son, who had been given up on by his doctors. While he was drinking milk during lunch time at school, some of the milk went down his bronchial tube, making him unable to breathe for a long time. Doctors had given up hope on him, but he recovered after drinking the water from Naju.
Lucia Lee from the Youngsan-po Parish (close to Naju):
Lucia Lee from the Youngsan-po Parish (close to Naju) had been suffering from a malfunctioning heart valve for five years, but was healed during an overnight prayer meeting in Naju. Another long-term illness of hers, an infection in her sinus, also disappeared while she was making pilgrimages to Naju.
Two young women became pregnant:
There are two young women who were told by their doctors that it would be impossible for them to become pregnant and that if they ever did it would be a miracle. These women did not give up and continued to drink the water from Naju and rub their belly with it, praying. Tom recently was told by both women that they became pregnant.
Dr. Gyula Molnar from Budapest, Hungary, wrote the next letter to Julia Kim on January1, 2000:
I myself took some samples of your water to my country. Several microbiologists have put themselves to the analysis of the water with strongly encouraging results. My friends at the National Center for Epidemiology in Budapest have maintained that the research with the holy water was never tiresome and constantly led them to unexpected discoveries. Of course, scientific analyses require much time since it is necessary to repeat them several times before definitive confirmation of the results can be obtained. What we can say with certitude after a year of research is that the holy water from Naju stops such bacteria as salmonella, escherichia coli, yessinia enterocholitica and cidrobacter freundii from propagating. These initial results have been verified not only with the original water from Naju but also with normal water to which a certain quantity of the holy water has been added. A series of experiments has demonstrated that upon simultaneously exposing a test tube of tap water and one of holy water to sunlight for several weeks, algae become noticeable in the first one three weeks before the phenomenon occurs in the second. Even so, the holy water maintains its purity and odorlessness longer than the normal water. Biologists and chemists are constantly at work to explore to what degree the holy water of Naju possesses the power to purify contaminated water, for example the water taken from a river. Laboratory experiments executed in August 1998 demonstrated that just one milliliter of the water from Naju purified to the original level 200 milliliters of tap water. Confirmation of these results is expected from here at the end of January. Water beetles were found to be useful agents in this process.
When Julia and her Husband Julio visited The Vatican on Oct 31,1995, pope John-Paul II witnessed the miracle of Eucharist, which was changed into a lump of bloody flesh in her mouth. Then the Pope blessed her family blessing and gave them a Rosary as a gift.
Update January 28, 2016:
Pilgrimage to Naju is allowed as the official position of the Church on Naju
On February 24, 2009, the Archdiocese of
Gwangju openly published a translated version of a letter (NO. 112/1993-27066) sent from the secretary of “the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith” on April 24, 2008. Through the letter, we got to know that official stand adopted by the Catholic Church concerning all the events occurring at Naju as “Non Constat de Supernaturalitate”, translated as: “Not confirming that it is supernatural so far.”
The decision of the local bishop should be one of the following:
① constat de supernaturalitate : (confirmed as supernatural) - Lourdes(France)
② constat de non supernaturalitate : (confirmed as not supernatural) - Bayside(USA)
③ non constat de supernaturalitate : (not confirmed as supernatural) - Naju(Korea)
“Non Constat de Supernaturalitate” means it may not be evident whether or not the alleged apparition is authentic. Thus, the current Holy See’s official stance on Naju is that the investigation has not been completed yet and therefore needs more observation of the evidences, testimonies, and fruits.
It also implies that activities privately-initiated pilgrimages, prayer meetings, the Sacrament of Confessions, testimonies, distributions of newsletters published by Naju and so on will not be prohibited but be freely allowed. In conclusion, Pilgrimage to Naju is allowed as the official position of the Church on Naju (Non Constat de Supernaturalitate)
Pilgrimage to Naju is allowed as the official position of the Church on Naju “Naju is the place for repentance and salvation for the 4 billion people in Asia and also the light for all the people in the world!” - Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis, the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Korea.
